David was an extremely hostile and disruptive 13 year old. He would burst into violent explosions and lash out against even those who tried to be supportive. However, after 'taking him under my wing' for about 6 months, the violence had subsided. When he was 15, I met his grandmother who said to me: "I dont know what you have done to David, but he certainly has changed a lot for the better." (Of course, I could not tell her what sort of relationship we actually had!)
There was nothing in the relationship with David based on "struggle, violence or dominance" except his initial outbursts. By the time he was 15 he was a quite calm and "gentle" person who was nice to be around.
(This is no secret -- descriptions were published by Project TRUTH/FreeWill back in the mid 1980s, including court testimony by David himself saying the same things...)
