Recognizing the Many Faces of PTSD: PTSD and Comorbidity

Patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are twice as likely to suffer from a comorbid psychiatric disorder as those without PTSD. It has been reported that only 21% of males and 12% of females with PTSD had no other psychiatric disorder. According to Kathleen Brady, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Drug and Alcohol Program at the Medical University of South Carolina, the most common comorbid diagnoses are substance abuse and affective disorders.

Dr. Brady next discussed diagnostic considerations. The symptoms of PTSD overlap with those of depression, generalized anxiety, and panic disorder. It seems that PTSD may be the "core event" leading to various symptoms that interact in complex ways.
