Badley et al. (1984)
For this sextion, we define the sex parts of your body as:
[explicit list: vagina, penis, crotch, anus, buttocks]
Has anyone ever exposed the sex parts of their body to you when
you didn't want it?
Has anyone ever threatened to have sex with you when you didn't
want this?
Has anyone ever touched the sex parts of your body when you didn't
want this?
Has anyone ever tried to have sex with you when you didn't want
this, or sexually attacked you?
Bagley and Ramsey (in press)
When you were a child (up to age 16) did you ever experience a
serious sexual assault by an older person?
Burnam (1985)
In your lifetime, has anyone ever tried to pressure or force you
to have sexual contact? By sexual contact I mean their touching your
sexual parts, your touching their sexual parts, or sexual intercourse.
How many times did this happen before you were 16 years of age?
Finkelhor (1979)

(6th grade) (circle any that apply).
- An invitation or request to do something sexual.

Choose three sexual experiences - or however many up tp three -
that you had before the age of 12 with other children, including
friends, strangers, brothers, sisters, and cousins. Pick the three
most important and answer the following questions about them. [...]
Now we want to ask you to think of three sexual experiences - or
however many up to three - that you had before the age of 12 with an
adult ( a person over 16) including strangers, friends, or family
members like cousins, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, mother, or
father. Pick the three most important to you and answer the following
questions: [...]
Now we would like you to think of sexaul experiences you had after
the age of twelfe with a family member or relative, including cousins,
uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, grandparents, mother or father, or a
guardian or close friend of a parent. (If this relationship was
described in a previous section, do not repeat it) Pick the three most
important to you and answer the following questions.
Finally, we would like you to think of any sexual experience that
occured to you after the age of 12, which you did not consent ot. That
is, a sexual experience which was forced on you, or done against your
will, or which you didn't want to happen. (Once again, do not repeat
describing a relationship you described earlier.) Pick the three most
important and answer the following questions.
Finkelhor (1984)
Think back to the time when you were growing up, before you were a6
years old. We are interested in any sexual things which may have
occured during that time with someone at least 5 years older than
you. These things may have been sexual abuse or may not have been
sexual abuse; we are interested in both kinds of things.
During the time before you 16, were any sexual things done to you
or with you by a person at least 5 years older than you?
Before you were 16 were any attempts made to do sexual things to
you by a person at least 5 years older?
Do you consider these experiences to have been sexual abuse?
Keckley Market Research (1984)
Thinking back on your own childhood, do you think that you were ever
asked to participate or do anything sexually as a child that you did
not want to do or felt uncomfortable about? (This excludes playing
among peers and dates.)
Kercher and McShane (1984)
"Were you ever sexually abused as a child?"
Earlier in the survey, sexual abuse had been defined as contacts or
interactions between a child and an adult when the child is being used
for the sexual stimulation of the perpetrator or another
person. Sexual abuse may be committed by a person under the age of 18
when that person is significantly older than the victim or when the
perpetrator is in the position of power or control over another child.
Lewis (1985)
1. When you were a child, can you remember having any experience
you would now consider sexual abuse - like someone trying or succeding
in having any kind of sexual intercourse with you, or anything like
that?
2. When you were a child, can you remember having any kind of
experience that you would now consider sexual abuse involving someone
touching you, or grabbing you, or kissing you, or rubbing against your
body either in a public place or in private - or anything else like
that?
3. When you were a child, can you remember any kind of experience
that you would now consider sexual abuse involving someone taking nude
photographs of you, or someone exhibiting parts of their body to you,
or someone performing some sex act in your presence - or anything like
that?
4. When you were a child, can you remember any kind of experience
that you would now consider sexual abuse involving oral sex or sodomy
- or anything like that?
Miller (1976)
Has anyone ever tried to sexually molest you?
Murphy (1985)
When you were under 18, were you ever physically or psychologically
forced by an adult to engage in any unwanted sexual activity such as
unwanted sexual touching of your body or sexual intercourse?
Russell (1983)
- Before you turned 14, were you ever upset by anyone exposing
their genitals?
- Did anyone ever try or succeed in having any kind of sexual
intercourse with you against your wishes before you turned 14?
- In those years, did anyone ever try or succeed in getting you to
touch their genitals against your wishes (besides anyone you've
already mentioned)?
- Did anyone try or succeed in touching your breasts or genitals
against your wishes before you turned 14 (besides anyone you have
already mentioned)?
- Before you turned 14, did anyone ever feel you, grab you, or
kiss you in a way you felt was sexually threatening (...)
- Before you turned 14, did you have any (other) upsetting sexual experience that you havn't mentioned yet?
- At any time in your life ...
Wyatt (1985)
It is now generally realized that many women, while they were children
or adolescents, have had a sexual experience with an adult or someone
older than themselves. By sexual, I mean behaviours ranging from
someone exposing themselves (their genitals) to you, to someone having
intercourse with you. These experiences may have a relative, a friend
of the family, or a stranger. Some experiences are very upsetting and
painful while others are not, and some may have ocurred without
consent.
Now I'd like you to think bach to your childhood and adolescense
and remember if you had any sexual experiences with a relative, family
friend, or stranger. Describe each experience completely and separately.
- During childhood and adolescence, did anyone ever expose
themselves (their sexual organs) to you?
- During childhood and adolescence, did anyone masturbate in front
of you?
- Did a realtive, family friend or stranger ever touch or fondle
your body, including breasts or genitals, or attempt to arouse you
sexually?
- During childhood and adolescence, did anyone try to have you
arouse them, or touch their body in a sexual way?
- Did anyone rub their genitals against your body in a sexual way?
- During childhood and adolescence, did anyone attempt to have
intercourse with you?
- Did anyone have intercourse with you?
- Did you have other sexual experiences involving a relative,
family friend or stranger?
