In a court of law, claiming entrapment may be used in defense. In most places, however, the defense of entrapment does not apply if it can be shown that the person accused of the crime would have been likely to commit a similar crime at some point in the future. The mere fact that a law-enforcement officer encouraged a person to commit a crime is usually not enough to prove entrapment.

This makes the use of an entrapment defense difficult for boylovers, especially if the alleged crime was committed using the resources of a forum or web site devoted to boylove. In such an instance, the person's propensity for visiting such web sites could be used to suggest that he also had a propensity to commit crimes against children, thereby nullifying any entrapment defense.

In the boylover community, entrapment may take the form of a law-enforcement officer or a vigilante posing as a boy and inviting the victim to perform some criminal act. Such acts may include sexual chat, trading [[child pornography]], or meeting the fake boy in real life. Censorship usually refers to the policy of removing parts of or, prohibiting the circulation of books. Works addressing the issue of [[pedophilia]] have often been censored. During the last ten years, however, we have witnessed a deliberate attempt, especially in the United States, to censor the work of scientists and independent researchers through slander campaigns and personal attacks that have little to do with scientific criticism.

== Early attempts to censor and intimidate [[pederasty]] commentators 1960s-1980s ==

The first comprehensive study of [[pederasty]], [[Walter Breen|Eglinton's]] Greek Love (1964) was banned in Australia, Ireland and South Africa the following year. Its publishers in United Kingdom had several problems as well and the book appeared only seven years later.

In 1978, in Canada, [[Gerald Hannon]] and the gay liberation magazine in which he worked, The Body Politic came under fire after the publication of his article "Men loving boys loving men" which took a positive look on [[boylove]] leading to a legal battle that lasted many years.

When [[Theo Sandfort]]'s research on sexual relationships between men and [[boy|boys]] in the Netherlands first appeared in English in the early 1980s, it was widely criticized and dismissed, even though critics have not actually read it (Bauserman 1990), as they have done with [[Daniel Tsang]]'s edited volume The Age Taboo (Tsang 2005).

In addition, by the 1990's, books published by boylove-frendly publishers such as [[Acolyte Press]] were banned in several countries including New Zealand, Canada and Ireland.

Apart from unfair criticism, independent researchers were also harassed when the police searched their houses and confiscated research material (books and articles) as in the cases of Gerald P. Jones and [[Thomas O'Carroll|Tom O’Carroll]].

== Censorship chic ==

In June 17, 1996 an article by Mary Eberstadt with the title "Pedophilia chic" appeared in Weekly Standard[http://www.weeklystandard.com/content/public/articles/000/000/001/333rtjrn.asp] outlining the public challenges to the [[taboo]] of [[pedophilia]]. This article further fuelled the censorship and intimidation attempts and a host of conservative organizations and journalists took the role of watchdogs, ready to denounce what they considered as "[[Socially Inappropriate|innapropriate]] research".

From 1997 to date their targets included:

* [[Chris Brand]], professor of psychology at Edinburgh University who lost his position in 1997 after publicly defending Nobel Prize winner physicist Daniel Gajdusek whom was facing a sentence for sexual relations with a boy.

* David Buchanan, barrister in New South Wales, Australia, Richard Guilliatt, senior Writer in Sydney Morning Herald, Lex Watson, senior Lecturer in Government in University of Sydney and others whose papers were "purged" from Australian Insitute of Criminology publication Paedophilia: policy and prevention (1997). In their papers, Buchanan, Guilliatt, Watson and others challenged conventional wisdom regarding recovered memories of child abuse, sex between adults and adolescents, and the age of consent.

* Ellis Hanson, professor of English at Cornell University who has been teaching a course on “The sexual child”. In 1998, "Accuracy in Academia", a conservative group that, according to its mission statement “wants schools to return to their traditional mission-the quest for truth” called Cornell University to cancel the teaching of the course. Their evidence against Hanson was only their highly innacurate reading of the course's syllabus.

* [[Bruce Rind]], from Temple University, [[Robert Bauserman]], psychologist at the State of Maryland and [[Philip Tromovich]] a (then) PhD student, after the publication of Rind et al. (1998) article in American Psychological Association journal Psychological Bulletin. After the National Association for Research and Treatment of Homosexuality denounced the study in their website, radio-host Laura Schlessinger attacked the article as being "junk science" and finally, the U.S. Congress unanimously condemned the scientific article. Rind et al. (2000, 2001), however, exposed the political motivations of their critics and Lilienfeld (2002) identified the multiple errors of analysis, reasoning, and logic evident in the arguments of many of the more vocal of their public critics. In addition, one of the two congressmen whom abstained from condemning the article explained why the condemnation was ridiculous (Baird 2002).

* [[Bruce Rind]], from Temple University (again!) for his article "Pederasty: An Integration of Cross-Cultural, Cross-Species, and Empirical Data" in a special 2005 issue of the Journal of Homosexuality. The article was accepted for publication and appeared in the pre-publication list but was later withdrawn after pressure to its publisher, Haworth Press. In addition to the attacks to particular scientists and researchers, science came under attack when the Brongersma Foundation archive was seized by the Dutch police in 2000.

* [[Harris Mirkin]], Associate Professor of Political Science (University of Missouri, Kansas City) for publishing his article "The Pattern of Sexual Politics: [[Feminism]], [[Homosexuality]] and [[Pedophilia]]," in Journal of Homosexuality in 1999. The Missouri House of Representatives voted 102-29 to eliminate professor Harris Mirkin's salary from the higher education budget in the coming year.

* The late [[Vern Bullough]], Distinguished Professor of State University of New York and Emeritus Professor of California State University was attacked for being in Paidika's editorial board (Bullough 2000).

* [[Judith Levine]] for her book Harmful to minors: the perils of protecting children from sex (2002). The book was turned down by several publishers, due to its controversial topic but finally was published by the prestigious University of Minnesota Press. The book was denounced by several religion fundamentalists months prior to its publication. Robert Knight the spokesperson of the anti-homosexual, anti-evolution and anti-abortion propaganda organization “Concerned Women for America” threatened that “if the Regents of the University of Minnesota do not act quickly to fire those responsible, the people of Minnesota and their elected representatives should move quickly to replace them.”

Started on 29 December, 1995, at Kasper's Free Spirits web site, it remains today largely in its original form: a single web board to which anyone can post under a nickname. BoyChat has grown from under 20 posters in the first two days to its current level of nearly 300 posters each month making between 200 and 400 posts each day [http://boychat.org/mbc/messages/51371.htm]. Any topic is allowed as long as it conforms to the Seven Rules, which are meant to keep BoyChat unambiguously legal and protect the privacy of its users.

== Community ==

BoyChat has had a profound effect on the [[boylove]] community. [[Free Spirits]] grew directly out of it, and the goals of "security, legality, and usability" guide the internal policies of each Free Spirits resource.

Under its slogan "you are not alone", BoyChat aims to provide a climate for personal support to [[boylover]]s experiencing difficult times. For many, BoyChat is the first introduction to the online boylove community and a realization that they are, indeed, not alone.

Although BoyChat's focus on staying clearly within the bounds of law and safety has helped make it the longest-running online boylover resource, some posters find the resulting climate uninviting and paranoid. These users find new homes on other boards with differing cultures.

After several suspected fake boys began to take up a large portion of BoyChat's resources in 1996, Sean007, then webmaster, created a board for boy participation called ChatHaven. It was the first auxiliary board of BoyChat, turning it from a single board into a community of boards. He removed ChatHaven after a few months because he believed it was making the problem of fake boys worse, not better.

=== MetaBoyChat ===

In February of 1998, Alexis, then member of the Free Spirits Committee ([[FSC]]), opened MetaBoyChat in order to free BoyChat from administrative debate and to provide a forum for participants to bring their questions and concerns to FSC members. MetaBoyChat was the earliest auxiliary board to BoyChat that is still in operation today. MetaBoyChat was offline for a time during the posting script change over in 1999-2000. It returned again in late 2000.

=== The Treehouse ===

The Treehouse was started by then Webmaster Asa to accommodate one-line and silly posts, which take up space and spark annoyance in the main index.

It was originally named The Little Boys Room (or LBR). This name brought much controversy from posters as to its innuendo that boylovers should hide out in a Little Boys Room to have fun. In North America the term Little Boys Room is associated with a washroom or toilet which might have given a rather poor impression on BL's. One poster in particular referred to the board as The Catbox. During the term of Webmaster Ford Prefect a vote was held on BoyChat to rename the board to its present name, The Treehouse.

The name may have harkened back to a message board created in 1996 by TPKA Green. Green's Treehouse board was not officially part of BoyChat, but it did serve as a heavily-attended meeting place for regular BoyChat posters.

=== YCDTOBC ===

Troll posts, flames, and other submissions that break BoyChat rules but do not endanger the community are moved to You Can't Do That On BoyChat, also known as "the slime board" due to its slimy decor. The title of the board is a play on the name You Can't Do That On Television, the 1980's television series broadcast on the cable channel Nickelodeon.

In late 2001 flame and off-topic threads were starting to dominate the BoyChat main index. Most prominent was one poster with strongly-voiced opinions on how BoyChat should be run. Webmaster Ford Prefect thought that moving the offending threads to another board would reduce disruption of the main index. Ford was right and BoyChat has remained a place to discuss boys.

=== OtherChat ===

After the World Trade Center catastrophe on September 11, 2001, BoyChat was overwhelmed with political and debate threads which had little to do with [[boys]]. During the next few months the need became apparent for another board for political discussions.

On September 10, 2002 OtherChat was born as a place for discussing "hot topics and current events" and it has remained popular ever since. It is currently the second-most-active board at BoyChat after the main index. Indeed, some posters eventually drifted away from the main board entirely and now only post on OtherChat.

The current background was designed by FoX.

== Life and work ==

Von Gloeden was a minor German aristocrat born in Mecklenburg in September 16, 1856 who, suffering from what appears to have been tuberculosis, came to Taormina in Sicily in 1876. He was wealthy and provided a considerable economic boost in this comparatively poor region of Italy, which might explain why the homosexual aspects of his life and work were generally tolerated by the locals.

Not all von Gloeden's photographs were nudes. The ones that garnered the most widespread attention in Europe and overseas were usually relatively chaste, featured clothes like togas and generally downplayed their homoerotic implications. More explicit photos in which the boys were nude and which, because of eye contact or physical contact, were more sexually suggestive were traded by the Baron "under the counter" to close friends.

In total the Baron took over 3,000 images which were widely disseminated due to new printing technologies that enabled the mass reproduction and sale of his work in postcard form.

After his death in February 16, 1931, von Gloeden left most of his works to one of his models, Pancrazio Buciunì, also known as "Il Moro" ("the Moor") for his North African looks. il Moro had been von Gloeden's lover since the age of fourteen, when he had first joined the household of the Baron.

In 1936, over 2,500 of the pictures were destroyed by Mussolini's police under the allegation that they constituted pornography. Most of the surviving images therefore come from private collections.

On the other hand, to many individuals, one is no longer a child once one has completed [[puberty]], which often happens at a much lower age than 18. Also, many countries (for example, Spain) have an age of consent which is different than the age of majority or other significant ages (legal drinking age, legal working age, etc.) which puts many people in the awkward position of being considered a child for some purposes and an adult for others.

The problem is not that there is a lack of clarity regarding who is or is not a boy, but rather that the status itself is fluid and different people make the transition to adulthood at different times. For some [[boylover]]s, for example, a young-looking sixteen-year-old still appeals to them as a boy whereas an old-looking fourteen-year-old may not. Thus, when describing someone as a "boy," we must understand that, while there are vast areas of agreement, there is still a small hazier area in the middle where disagreement should be expected.

During the last ten years, however, we have witnessed a deliberate attempt, especially in the United States, to censor the work of scientists and independent researchers through slander campaigns and personal attacks that have little to do with scientific criticism.

== Early attempts to censor and intimidate researchers 1960s-1980s ==

The first comprehensive study of boylove Eglinton's Greek Love (1964) was banned in Australia, Ireland and South Africa the following year. Its publishers in United Kingdom had several problems as well and the book appeared only seven years later.

In 1978, in Canada, Gerald Hannon and the gay liberation magazine in which he worked, The Body Politic came under fire after the publication of his article "Men loving boys loving men" which took a positive look on [[boylove]] leading to a legal battle that lasted many years.

When Theo Sandfort's research on sexual relationships between men and boys in the Netherlands first appeared in English in the early 1980s, it was widely criticized and dismissed, even though critics have not actually read it (Bauserman 1990), as they have done with Daniel Tsang's edited volume The Age Taboo (Tsang 2005).

In addition, by the 1990's, books published by boylove-frendly publishers such as Acolyte Press were banned in several countries including New Zealand, Canada and Ireland.

Apart from unfair criticism, independent researchers were also harrassed when the police searched their houses and confiscated research material (books and articles) as in the cases of Gerald P. Jones and [[Tom O’Carroll]].

== Censorship chic ==

In June 17, 1996 an article by Mary Eberstadt with the title "Pedophilia chic" appeared in Weekly Standard[http://www.weeklystandard.com/content/public/articles/000/000/001/333rtjrn.asp]outlining the public challenges to the taboo of pedophilia. This article further fuelled the censorship and intimidation attempts and a host of conservative organizations and journalists took the role of watchdogs, ready to denounce what they considered as "innapropriate research".

From 1997 to date their targets included:

* Chris Brand, professor of psychology at Edinburgh University who lost his position in 1997 after publicly defending Nobel Prize winner physicist Daniel Gajdusek whom was facing a sentence for sexual relations with a boy.

* David Buchanan, barrister in New South Wales, Australia, Richard Guilliatt, senior Writer in Sydney Morning Herald, Lex Watson, senior Lecturer in Government in University of Sydney and others whose papers were "purged" from Australian Insitute of Criminology publication Paedophilia: policy and prevention (1997). In their papers, Buchanan, Guilliatt, Watson and others challenged conventional wisdom regarding recovered memories of child abuse, sex between adults and adolescents, and the age of consent.

* Ellis Hanson, professor of English at Cornell University who has been teaching a course on “The sexual child”. In 1998, "Accuracy in Academia", a conservative group that, according to its mission statement “wants schools to return to their traditional mission-the quest for truth” called Cornell University to cancel the teaching of the course. Their evidence against Hanson was only their highly innacurate reading of the course's syllabus.

* [[Bruce Rind]], from Temple University, Robert Bauserman, psychologist at the State of Maryland and Philip Tromovich a (then) PhD student, after the publication of Rind et al. (1998) article in American Psychological Association journal Psychological Bulletin. After the National Association for Research and Treatment of Homosexuality denounced the study in their website, radio-host Laura Schlessinger attacked the article as being "junk science" and finally, the U.S. Congress unanimously condemned the scientific article. Rind et al. (2000, 2001), however, exposed the political motivations of their critics and Lilienfeld (2002) identified the multiple errors of analysis, reasoning, and logic evident in the arguments of many of the more vocal of their public critics. In addition, one of the two congressmen whom abstained from condemning the article explained why the condemnation was ridiculous (Baird 2002).

* Harris Mirkin, Associate Professor of Political Science (University of Missouri, Kansas City) for publishing his article "The Pattern of Sexual Politics: [[Feminism]], [[Homosexuality]] and [[Pedophilia]]," in Journal of Homosexuality in 1999. The Missouri House of Representatives voted 102-29 to eliminate professor Harris Mirkin's salary from the higher education budget in the coming year.

* The late Vern Bullough, Distinguished Professor of State University of New York and Emeritus Professor of California State University was attacked for being in Paidika's editorial board (Bullough 2000).

* [[Judith Levine]] for her book Harmful to minors: the perils of protecting children from sex (2002). The book was turned down by several publishers, due to its controversial topic but finally was published by the prestigious University of Minnesota Press. The book was denounced by several religion fundamentalists months prior to its publication. Robert Knight the spokesperson of the anti-homosexual, anti-evolution and anti-abortion propaganda organization “Concerned Women for America” threatened that “if the Regents of the University of Minnesota do not act quickly to fire those responsible, the people of Minnesota and their elected representatives should move quickly to replace them.”

His definition of boylover is a person who when he or she falls in love, tends to fall in love with a boy.

== Characteristics of boylovers ==

Boylovers come from all walks of life, from all peoples throughout the world, and are of all ages.

The attraction that defines boylovers is composed of many qualities. The most controversial quality is the sexual attraction which usually implies a strong physical attraction to boys. For well-adjusted boylovers (those not feeling as if their attractions are morally "wrong"), these feelings are a healthy part of his being. Many boylovers express a desire to teach, to care for, to protect, to guide, to nourish, and/or to interact with boys.

A boylover's attraction to boys is not always exclusive. A boylover may also be attracted to girls (see girllover and childlover), women, and/or men.

Boylovers can be attracted to any age boy, although most boylovers have a particular affection for boys within a certain age range. At the two extremes of the spectrum of age preferences, there are boylovers who are primarily attracted to younger children from 3 to 6 and those who are primarily attracted to boys who are into puberty or older. They are often labeled with the terms little boy lovers and teen boy lovers. These terms more properly describe the qualities the boylover enjoys most and the age ranges he prefers; though most boylovers have an age of attraction falling somewhere between the lower bound of little boy lover and upper bound of teen boy lover. The term "boylover", however, is all-encompassing.

== Boylover culture ==

Most self-identified boylovers in the online boylove community value the ideals expressed by boylove. Because being a boylover is only a small part of a person's personality, boylovers run the same range of personalities as heterosexual or homosexual persons. Therefore boylovers are normal people with no particular or peculiar claim to being upright or moral. The only universally accepted code of ethics among boylovers is to never hurt a boy (a consequence of the so-called golden rule). However, there is neither agreement on what is harmful or not harmful, nor on what constitutes acceptable risk.

The most dividing issue among boylovers is the issue of sex. Some feel that sex is not inherently harmful, and some feel that sex is not an acceptable activity. Most who argue against sex say that society's stigma against homosexuality makes boys ill-prepared to handle the possible emotional and societal consequences of a sexual relationship, and the possibility of harm is too great. Others who argue against sex say that the simple reality of the law and its consequences renders more abstract analysis moot. For example, a sexual relationship between a man and a boy will cause the boy to lose his adult friend when the relationship is discovered. Even if the sex itself were inherently harmless, the loss of a beloved friend or father figure, public exposure of a socially inappropriate relationship, and resulting legal action could be very traumatic to the boy.

== Boylovers in history ==

History records evidence of boylovers as far back as ancient Greece. Across time and religions, boylovers have shaped history and left an indelible imprint in the minds of humanity. Socrates, Hippocrates, Leonardo da Vinci, and famous poets such as those mentioned in the 1001 Arabian Nights are all examples of famous boylovers (see Category:Famous boylovers for more). From the Stone Age to the Space Age, boylovers have existed alongside people of other sexual attractions.

In modern times, boylovers are often reviled in the media and other popular thought. Much myth and prejudice surround boylovers in most modern Western cultures. This often but not always leads to initial feelings of depression, isolation, futility, and self-hatred. The discovery of other boylovers or the boylove community helps to reinforce the idea of responsible behavior and focus on the positive aspects of being a boylover.

== Alternative terminology ==

The exact definition--both denotatively and connotatively--of the word "boylover" has been a topic of intense debate almost since the word itself came into common usage. Being as the word originally rose to popularity as a reaction against an increasing misusage and bastardization of the word "pedophile," the entire history of the word has been accompanied by many discussions, debates and often downright arguments about various shades of meaning attributed to this word and its many proposed replacements.

This ongoing debate has spawned many neologisms and new expressions as various individuals attempt to come to terms with their own status as a boylover and find a label with which they feel comfortable. In many cases, these labels are classificatory, which is to say, they are not intended to change the connotation but merely further divide the supergroup of boylovers into identifiable subcategories (the terms little boy lover and teen boy lover are examples of this type of sublabeling).

In other cases, the new labels are connotative, that is to say, attempts to achieve entirely new connotations under the belief that the boylove movement as a whole is better served by utilizing a term over which they themselves control the connotations and not their opponents. Critics of this tendency point out that any new expression which begins to gain popularity will simply be coopted yet again by the mass media and popular consciousness, resulting in a never-ending search for yet more new terms, and that boylovers are best served by stubbornly insisting on their definitions for the terms already in use.

Examples of some terms which qualify as this type of connotative relabeling are:

* pedosexual - An attempt to standardize boylove as a sexual preference or orientation, coined by analogy with the terms heterosexual and homosexual. Critics of this term note that neologisms tend to alienate readers and listeners, and the obvious resonance with the term "pedophile" does not succeed in redefining the connotation.

* minor attracted adult (abbreviated MAA) - An expression designed to sanitize the concept into the realm of psychological and clinical writings. Critics note that the obvious euphimism may serve to draw more, not less, attention to the negative connotations we seek to avoid, and often imitate sheep while saying it. Additionally, critics have argued the term excludes many younger boylovers who aren't yet adults and also does not accurately describe boylovers in places where the age of majority is quite low. Teen boy lovers can often not be accurately described as minor attracted adults.

* responsible boylove - A term invented by a single individual who believed that the usage of the term "boylover" by people who seemed to be sexual predators or child molesters was diluting the intended connotation and thus wished to distinguish himself from the crowd. Critics of this term see it as an implication that boylove itself is somehow inherently irresponsible and must be thusly distinguished.

* puerosexual - A recoinage of "pedophile" using the Latinate root for "boy." Critics note that this term suffers from many of the same problems as "pedosexual" in addition to being more obscure.

== Capitalization ==

Since the term "boylover" is most commonly used as a term for a sexual preference analogous to "gay" or "homosexual," it is most properly used as a common noun and therefore not capitalized in English. Some writers will capitalize it, and others will even write it in mixed case ("BoyLover"), but these alternative capitalizations are in the nature of artistic license. Other languages seem to follow local standards for common, compound nouns as well.

== Origin ==

The crime of statutory rape was introduced into English law as a felony by the Statutes of Westminster [3 Edw, c.13, 1275] and later made a capital offence [13 Edw, c.34, 1285]. It was defined as

* a man (or boy)
* having (vaginal) intercourse with
* a girl
* less than 12 years of age
* not his wife.

It carried over to United States law and together with sodomy it constitutes the core of the sexual offences in the Anglo-Saxon tradition. Most clauses of the definition have, however, undergone important changes in recent years. Only the marital exception ("not his wife") remains yet unchanged.

The following currently only deals with United States law.

== Age limit ==

The age limit (commonly called age of consent) remained at ten or twelve years until the 1880s (Cocca, p. 23f., has a table). Following its raising in England by the the Criminal Law Amendment Act [48 & 49 Vict., c.69, 1885], a coalition of progressives, feminists, and religious conservatives was formed and successfully lobbied for a higher limit. It is remarkable that this coalition would remain essentially stable for more than a century, in spite of fundamental differences.

The offence now was more akin to seduction and from it the defence of promiscuity entered the law of statutory rape, its protection was now restricted to (evidently) white girls of ‘previously chaste character’. Another change that came about was the introduction of "age-span" provisions, first in New York, then, much later in many, but not all, other states. These provisions sought to decriminalise same-age sexual behaviour, albeit half-heartedly as often minor offences remained in effect that covered exactly these cases.

== Broadening the definition ==

Part of the "rape reform" under way in the 1970s was to include other kinds of sexual activity besides vaginal intercourse in the definition in order to protect very young children.

The feminist agenda also encouraged use of gender-neutral language, which is now employed in every U.S. state.

Taken together these changes make statutory rape a very broad offence.

== Criticism ==

It should be said that statutory rape laws are very controversial and some consider them being unconstitutional. They point out that although the presumption of innocence is used in practically all other criminal cases, including murder of children, it is not used with respect to statutory rape, for which offences are measured only on the basis of age of the victim. That is, in murder cases the accused has the opportunity to provide evidence that he didn't kill the victim, but in statutory rape cases violence is assumed per si, through a conclusive presumption, solely on the basis of the age of the victim and regardless of any evidence to the contrary.

Therefore, even though all defendants in statutory rape cases have the right to an attorney, to speak in court, to a fair defense, to present mitigating circumstances, to a fair trial and the right to appeal, all these rights only serve as a way to determine the degree of the penalty to be applied, and the accused is already considered guilty before the trial begins, even when consent is proven beyond any reasonable doubt and when parental consent is documented.

For example, in May 2006, the Irish Supreme Court found the existing statutory rape laws to have been unconstitutional as it prevented the defendant from entering a defence (e.g., that he had assumed the other party was over the age of consent). This has led to the release of persons held under the statutory rape law and has led to public demands that the law be changed by emergency legislation being enacted.

To Catch a Predator is a recurring segment on NBC's Dateline news show whose mission is to lure adult men into sexual chats with people posing as children, invite them to a house to meet the imaginary children, and then expose them on national television. The segment is wildly popular; episodes featuring "Predator" segments are ranked 16 among NBC's 41 regularly broadcast shows in the 2005-2006 season.

[[Perverted Justice]] and its leader [[Xavier Von Erck]] provide the vigilante operations and the actual luring of the show's sting victims. Perverted Justice is paid at least USD 100,000 per episode, as well as being promised a cut from future DVD releases.

On June 1st, 2007, all twenty-four cases brought up during an episode set in Murphy, Texas were declined to be prosecuted by the Collin County prosecutor's office due to insufficient evidence (Dallas Morning News, 1 June 2007), but only after one suspect (a former assistant district attorney) had committed suicide (Associated Press, 6 November 2006).

== Ethics lawsuit ==

On 24 May 2007, former Dateline producer Marsha Bartel sued NBC for breach of her employment contract. NBC claimed they fired her on 17 November 2006 as part of NBC's "TV 2.0" reorganization, but Bartel contends that the dismissal was due to her reaction to the extensive breaches of NBC's ethics code and journalistic ethical standards during Dateline production. The specific breaches mentioned by Bartel were:

* Perverted Justice was deputized as part of the sting, despite being "a shadowy organization with ill-defined purposes".
* Bartel as a producer was denied access to Perverted Justice volunteers, even though they were pivotal to the show's production.
* NBC's view of Perverted Justice changed after they began paying the organization. At first, they were viewed as "vigilante[s]"; later, they were viewed as "watchdog[s]". Bartel quotes Dateline Executive Producer David Corvo as saying, "We all know they're nuts."
* As paid contributors, Perverted Justice demonstrate a conflict of interest in their personal and professional lives. (This may refer to an intricate plan of revenge by Xavier Von Erck on one of his former covolunteers; see the Radar Online reference for more.)
* By paying Perverted Justice to troll and lure sting targets, NBC gives the organization incentive to lie to and trick their victims.
* Dateline host Chris Hansen lied to the public about NBC's "parallel investigation" with law enforcement in order to appear ethical. (In reality, NBC and law enforcement agencies were working closely together, as the next items suggest.)
* NBC traded video equipment and tapes with law enforcement for "dramatically staged arrest scenarios" and police interrogations to "increase ratings and ultimately revenues for NBC".
* Also to increase dramatic effect, NBC paid or reimbursed law enforcement officials to participate in the sting.
* NBC provided live data feeds to law enforcement during the sting operations, and later to prosecutors.
* In an unwritten agreement with law enforcement, officials provided confidential information they otherwise would not.
* The show covered up unethical and humiliating behavior by law enforcement officials.
* Perverted Justice did not provide complete transcripts of their trolling operations, making it impossible for Dateline producers to check them. Independent verification was also impossible.
* Although sting victims initially decide not to come, Perverted Justice vigilantes (posing as children) would beg the victims to come anyway. Dateline and Perverted justice would cover up these facts.
* Sting victims were led into additional acts of humiliation, such as undressing on national television.
* Chris Hansen overreported child abuse, saying that "at any given time, 50,000 predators were on the internet prowling children", even FBI sources show that this is false.
* NBC News and anyone acting on its behalf must obey United States and local laws, yet "Perverted Justice has been accused of committing the exact crime it claims it wishes to prevent, i.e. minors being exposed to pornography." NBC was told of this, yet took no action.

These men are then exposed either on the organization's website or through the "[[To Catch a Predator]]" segment on NBC's Dateline show, and subsequently arrested by law enforcement officers.

The organization was found by [[Xavier Von Erck]], who continues to run it. Members of the organization are geographically distributed throughout the United States.

The organization is criticized for its shadowy methods, its vigilante ideology, and its desire to destroy lives rather than serve justice. (ABC News, 10 January 2005; 10 Zen Monkeys, 2 October 2006) The U.S. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) has also criticized the organization. Tina Schwartz, NCMEC director of communication, has said: "It's really not the safest, most effective way to combat this problem ... From what I've seen ... they embarrass the people, but I don't know that complete justice is ever served". (Roanoke Times, 22 January 2005)

Child-safety advocate Julie Posey describes Perverted-Justice's tactics as "a gross invasion of privacy." Posey indicates that she doesn't feel their methods are completely effective, "What it does is embarrass them for the moment... but then they'll go and get a different screen name and know to check things out a little more thoroughly next time." (ABC news, 10 January 2005)

Posey and Perverted Justice founder [[Xavier Von Erck]] appeared on Fox News shortly thereafter. Regarding the Perverted Justice website, Posey remarked, "It’s more of an entertainment site, actually. You go there, you click on a link of a picture that takes you to that person’s chat-log and that person has a scale—a sliminess scale as he calls it—and you can rate the pervert from, I think it’s one to five. To me, that kind of gives a sense of entertainment. Anybody that finds entertainment value in exploiting children, I have a problem with it." (Fox News, January 2005)

A survey conducted by the British National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children found that, for a hypothetical scenario involving a 15-year-old boy and a 23-year-old woman, current legal definitions of sexual abuse were rejected by 88% of minor respondents. Dave Riegel reports that, in a study of an Internet sample presented with a series of hypothetical scenarios involving males of varying ages, perception of sexual abuse among respondents shows a modest but significant negative correlation with perception of consent, suggesting that popular perception of sexual abuse may be inconsistent with certain legal and scientific definitions that do not take consent into account.

Free Spirits (FS) is an organization formed to promote open communication among boylovers. It grew out of a need to ensure the continued existence of BoyChat, but has since sponsored various other resources. It is named after Kasper's Free Spirits web site, which was one of the first Web pages on the Internet created to celebrate boylove, and the original home of BoyChat.

Free Spirits does not take any stance on boylove issues nor does it advocate any position or ideology, but simply exists to provide the infrastructure and support to ensure that its resources are able to be run securely and continuously. The Free Spirits Committee plans and carries out all FS initiatives.

The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) is an organization working for men that love boys. It provides services such as a prisoners' program (which organizes visits, correspondence, and news for the benefit of boylovers in prison) and publishes The Nambla Bulletin. The organization is currently developing "Coming out" guides for boylovers.

== History ==

NAMBLA had its beginnings in the 1970s during the height of the Sexual Revolution. It was at first central in the nascent gay political-activism community. The first Gay Pride parades in New York City featured boylove-themed entries. After the Anita Bryant episodes of the 1970s NAMBLA became gradually less accepted by the leadership of the larger gay movement. By 1994, the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the Nambla entry in the NYC Gay Pride parade was met with catcalls and derision by some observers, though not by all: some of the men and teenage boys who marched that year were greeted with hugs and appreciation by a few of the onlookers. Note that this was the time that the same-gender oriented community became split. Many organizations such as NAMBLA and PROJECT TRUTH were no longer able to use the word " GAY ". Banned from the Pride Days and the community centres as well as the Gay Anarchists and other sympathetic and likewise scorned groups; once so an important part of the early GAY movement. When Gay meant same-gender oriented. This split was a result of the International Lesbian and Gay Association's attempt to gain greater acceptance within the United Nations - which failed -. Also the threats of the United States to withhold U.N. dues in retaliation towards perceived Anti-American groups. NAMBLA was counted amongst these groups.

During the first couple of years after the founding of Free Spirits, NAMBLA leadership provided some mentoring and advice to FSC members and referred the FSC to its first regular legal counselor.

Bill Andriette and Roy Radow are two of the more well-known leaders of NAMBLA during the first few years of the 21st century. Andriette writes a popular column in the gay tourist magazine, "The Guide", frequently addressing topics of interest to teen-boy lovers.

== Teenager bias ==

NAMBLA is popularly considered a pedophilia organization. But the leadership and membership of the organization tend to be more interested in love between men and teenage boys, ephebophilia, than love of younger boys, pedophilia.
