The Aim of Therapy
Only at a first look, this question seems to be easy. The
aim is to minimize crime in future. But, in the
absense of an ideal therapy which turns the pedophile into a straight
without side effects, we can esily see that the aim of the therapy is
closely related with the connection of the society to pedophilia. This
can be easily seen considering the following questions:
Is it a successful therapy to teach the pedophile to masturbate with
child-porn instead of making sex?
Or, better, with pictures of naked children? In a society were
possessing such things is forbidden by child-porn laws, this seems to
be not a big success.
Is it a successful therapy to teach the pedophile to make consensual
sex instead of non-consensual sex?
Even, if there will be more occurrences of consensual sex?
The answer depends on the questions how the possible harm of such
relations will be considered. To get the optimal answer to this
question, we need the probabilities of harm for above types of
pedosexual relations.
This question is not hypothetical, because there are possibilities
of influence in this direction. In our current society, there we have
usually the same punishment for consensual and non-consensual sex, it
will not be considered as successful.
Is it a successful therapy to teach the pedophile to accept his
feelings?
Or, may be it's better if the pedophile hates himself, even if this
leads to neurosis, suicide danger and so on? Let's consider this from
point of view of the pedosexual relations which are probable:
- A pedophile who accepts himself and his own sexual desire
usually accepts for himself consensual sexual relations with
children. The decision not to make sex with a minor which does not
want it is no more stressful than the decision of a heterosexual not
to rape a women which does not want sex. Thus, he will probably not
loose self-control.
- A pedophile who hates himself and his desire, usually does not
accept any sexual relation. But this decision is connected with very
high stress - it means to have no sex for the whole life. There is a
much greater probability that he can loose his self-control.
In the case of loosing control, the pedosexual contact is likely
to be much more severe. Because in his opinion "consent doesn't
matter", the relation may be non-consensual, even raping and killing
the child is possible. Alcohol or drugs may be the reason for loosing
self-control, thus the probability is high that he is under their
influence. Even if the relation is fully consensual, the child usually
feels the self-hate and the negative relation to sex of the adult. This
can lead to emotional problems (guilt feelings) for the minor.
We see, the situation is exactly what we have described in the
previous point.
Is it a successful therapy to teach the pedophile to have a single
long-term relation instead of many anonymous?
Usually a long-term relation, if detected, leads even to higher
penalties compared with a single event. Moreover, it is easier to
detect. Thus, the probability of future convictions becomes even
greater.
Is it a successful therapy to teach the pedophile to restrict
himself to lower-level sex?
Because usually any form of sex is forbidden and often even with the same
punishment, this will not lead to big "success rates".
Is it a successful therapy to kill all sexual feelings of the
pedophile?
Or even to kill the pedophile? From point of view of "success rates",
it will be optimal. But, in a normal society which treats the
pedophile as a human being, such "therapy" will be considered as
barbarian.
