Herbert "Harry" Stack Sullivan (February 21, 1892, Norwich, New York – January 14, 1949, Paris, France) was an American Neo-Freudian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Along with Clara Thompson, Karen Horney, Erich Fromm, Otto Allen Will, Jr., Erik H. Erikson, and Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, Sullivan laid the groundwork for understanding the individual based on the network of relationships in which they are enmeshed. He developed a theory of psychiatry based on interpersonal relationships where cultural forces are largely responsible for mental illnesses. [1]
At eight and a half he formed a close relationship with Clarence Belliger, a boy five years older who initiated him sexually. Both Sullivan and his older boyfriend, who also became a psychiatrist, remained homosexuals. [...]
In a never published autobiography he composed between 1929-1933, in which he acknowledged his own homosexuality, he affirmed this belief, that the prolonged period of active homosexuality in adolescences is necessary for one to have sound mental health in later life. Thus he endorsed this positive aspect of Greek paiderasteia. [2]
Beginning in 1927, Sullivan had a 22-year relationship with James Inscoe Sullivan, known as "Jimmie", who was 20 years younger than Sullivan.[1] This means that Jimmie was about 15 year old when they met.
