Rape Rock or Shock Rock is a subgenre of rock and heavy metal music that sets it's focus on shock value, often times displaying offensive, violent and sexually suggestive lyrics paired with dynamic music[1]
The Mentors, a heavy metal band originally formed in May 1976 in Seattle, Washington is known for having created and popularized the "Rape Rock" genre and played an identifiable role in pushing the boundaries of freedom of speech.[2]
Censorship
Ever since the early days of shock rock in the 1970s, politicians have used it to advocate for the censorship of the music industry, but in recent years backlash has steadily reduced.[3]
During the height of the Mentors was invited to the Hot Seat TV show to be interviewed by host Wally George where they were repeatedly denounced and the lead singer's black hood used for concealing the members' identity was snatched off. Because of the conflict between the host and the audience which was actively rallying in favor of the band, the interview was forced to end prematurely.
