Margaret Haney

Margaret Haney (aka "Big Mags") was a Scottish anti-pedophile campaigner, community leader, working-class matriarch and drug dealer. Her work foresaw the anti-sex offender vigilantism associated with such communities in the late 90s and early 00s.
She shot to fame in the 90s after leading a hatemob to successfully evacuate a sex offender from her housing estate, going on to make multiple media appearances in which she evinced the "chastening aura" that made her presence so feared north of the border.
News pieces mention that in the later months, she was widely exposed as a known drug dealer in her community, and her family were involved in various crimes. It was her own brand of mob justice that was eventually to backfire on her, as she was chased out of her community by a group larger than the ones she had whipped up against any sex offender.
In 2025, the BBC released a "true crime" podcast about her.[1]
In 2013, she died of cancer.[2]
