Summary

Photo selected for 2021 Holland Pride event which fueled right-wing American panic/groomer and "pedo normalization" discourse. The organizers made an appeal to send in the most iconic, meaningful and aesthetic photos for 25 years of Pride Amsterdam. In the end, a selection of fifty photos was chosen for the outdoor exhibition 'Celebrating Diversity' in the Vondelpark, from which three winners were chosen by a jury of experts led by Cornald Maas - one of which was this photo "Celebrating Diversity" by Jan van Breda.

In selecting van Breda's photo, the jury stated that "This photo, in its composition - child in the foreground, men preparing for Canal Parade in the background, everyone busy with their own activities and fascinations - sublimely depicts what will hopefully remain self-evident: that we, unhampered by prejudices, and almost unsuspectingly, all may and can exist side by side."

Het jaarlijkse hoogtepunt van de Amsterdam Gay Pride is de Canal Parade, de bonte tocht van homo's, lesbo's en tavestieten over de Prinsengracht. De Canal Parade in Amsterdam is drukker bezocht dan ooit, zegt de organisatie. Vorig jaar stonden 400.000 toeschouwers langs de grachten, dit jaar denkt organisator Pro Gay dat meer dan een half miljoen mensen naar het spektakel zijn gekomen. Pro Gay-voorzitter Van Dalen baseert zijn schatting op berichten van medewerkers langs de route. Die meldden dat het zelfs op plekken waar vroeger maar weinig mensen stonden vandaag een drukte van belang was. De jaarlijkse botenoptocht is het bekendste onderdeel van de Amsterdam Gay Pride, het grootste gay-evenement van Nederland, en werd dit jaar voor de dertiende keer gehouden. De parade duurde tot ongeveer 18.00 uur. Veel aandacht trok de boot van het kabinet. Daarop zaten de PvdA-ministers Plasterk (Emancipatie), Ter Horst (Binnenlandse Zaken) en Koenders (Ontwikkelingssamenwerking) en de PvdA-staatssecretarissen Dijksma (Onderwijs) en Timmermans (Europese Zaken). Ook de Amsterdamse burgemeester Job Cohen (ook PvdA) voer samen met enkele wethouders en ambtenaren mee in een eigen boot. Hun deelname leek niet goed te vallen bij coalitiepartner ChristenUnie. Minister Van Middelkoop van Defensie noemde de aanwezigheid van zoveel PvdA-bewindslieden vanochtend "een beetje provocerend".
