It first received widespread media attention in April 2023, following an online controversy involving Twitter owner Elon Musk and ZeebDemon, a female-identifying pro-paraphilia, Youthlib influencer who is in categorical terms a Child Sexual Abuse survivor, but rejects the label of victim.[1][2][3] ZeebDemon also published a "YAP Flag" at the same time.

American Conservatives have identified "YAP" as an attempt to force what they characterize as the "normalization of pedophilia" to its "logical conclusion" (the abolition of Minority) following the spread of the term "MAP" into Academia via hundreds of citations.[4]
Prior to this, it was mentioned on the temporarily closed video networking site FreeSpeechTube. Some users believe that in this instance, it was used in a hoax perpetuated by members of Operation Underground Railroad or other hostile actors, although this remains speculative and hard to prove.
