A Minor Attracted Person (MAP) is a person who experiences sexual or romantic attractions towards people under the local age of consent - sometimes applied universally to the age of 18. The term was coined in early 2007 as a neologism by two activists with differing attractions (pedophilic and nonpedophilic).

Specifications

  • Minors may themselves be accurately classified as MAPs. This might seem counterintuitive, but aligns with most professional opinions.
  • Explicit identification as an MAP implies preferential attraction to minors. Non-preferential attraction to minors is very common (see research), as is prefrerential hebephilia.

Subtypes

While there is not full approval of medical "classification bingo" (among MAPs), many of the following long-standing psychiatric terms have been absorbed into the MAP chronophilia lexicon:

Expressions such as Boylove and Girllove are also common, particularly within the peer support community. Nowadays, these terms tend not to be used in outward-facing activism, due to their romantic overtones. MAPs may define as exclusive (no interest in adults) or nonexclusive (also interested in adults). Further, sociopolitical subtypes are used in both inward and outward facing situations, including NOMAP, pro-c and anti-contact.

Socipolitical background

The term "MAP" has a number of functions. As well as being more inclusive than terms such as pederast or pedophile, it addresses the stigma and conflatory misuse of pedophilia. Its wide adoption also effectively signals to the public that a movement does exist, and the topic is in play.

In the present climate, the act of self-identifying as an MAP can been seen as a political act. As a result, MAPs are sometimes incorrectly assumed to be disclosing pedophilia, which is just one form of minor attraction - as is explained above.

Community

A limited, but growing community does exist for MAPs of all persuasions. This article goes on to discuss public-facing or organized activism with respect to minor attracted identities, while the community article also includes basic peer support.

Origin

The term originates from the late 00s era, was popularized in 2007 by Newgon.com (our predecessor), B4U-Act and other blogs such as ATC/ANU. There is one example of the term being suggested on BoyChat as early as 2001, but no further examples have been found in the intervening period, suggesting it did not catch on.

2001 as ground zero, but no takeoff

As noted by B4U-Act (founded in 2003) in their Twitter thread, in 2007 - they, some MAPs and academic authors had been using the similar term "Minor Attracted Adult" (MAA) for some time. This was because Heather Peterson (a Christian author/researcher who embedded herself in the BoyChat community) coined MAA as early as 1998[1][2][3], and used it frequently in her communications. The Internet Archive reveals mentions of the term "Minor Attracted Person/MAP", "Minor Attracted Homosexual" and 'Minor Attracted Men" as early as 2001.[4][5][6] It has been claimed that the present term "MAP" might have been put forward at an even earlier date by the late BoyChat user GhostWriter.[7] Despite the occasional use of "minor attracted" and adoption of "Minor Attracted Adult", there is an absence of archive evidence for the other specifier terms between 2001 and 2007. This is thought to be because the post-2006 brand of online youth MAP activism (second-wave MAP activism) was virtually nonexistent at that point.

2007 - full adoption as a discourse by ANU

In 2006/7, as the burgeoning MAP blogging movement got underway (primarily on blogger.com/blogspot), there were, as to be expected, further uses of the term "minor attraction" and "MAA". The first subsequent examples of "Minor Attracted Person" we can find were linked to the blog ATC/ANU[8] in Jan and Feb 2007, with the blog-author also submitting the term to a Guardian debate, Slashdot and Scienceblogs.[9][10][11][12][13] This slow pivot from "Minor Attracted Adult" and the generic "minor attraction" (as evidenced by BC archives[14]), to "Minor Attracted Person" was thought to be due to these bloggers' relatively young age (see gallery). For example, the most active authors on ANU were in their late teens and early 20s, having experienced an attraction to minors before adulthood.[15][16][17] In addition to this, the first authors to use the term "Minor Attracted Person" (BLueRibbon and Daniel Lievre) were pedophilic and ephebophilic respectively (see gallery), so the more inclusive term suited their writings.[18]

On Jun 8, 2007, Newgon.com was founded (at that time a small website started by two censored bloggers, Daniel Lievre/Llort and Jillium - also of ANU), and the new term was visible in its ethos (belatedly captured on its blog arm, dated Jul 17).[19] B4U-Act began to use the term on June 22, 2007, incorporating it into their own lexicon.[20] It is likely they were aware of the new coinage by MAPs, and adopted it soon after. The late Michael Melsheimer, a MAP and founding member of B4U-Act, or prominent member Richard Kramer might been somewhat responsible for popularizing the new language, since they were in some kind of contact with the rest of the community (for example on BoyChat). Our predecessor, Newgon.com, created the first known dedicated article (this very article) to define Minor Attracted People in September 2008 (see history).

2009 onward - the MAP Flag

In order to identify themselves, MAPs have created a MAP Flag, which garnered widespread social media attention in Jul-Aug 2018, along with the term "Minor Attracted Person". Rumors had spread that MAPs intended to use the flag at pride, and these fears resurfaced the following summer.

The concept appears to go back at least to a 2009 competition, on Newgon.com (our predecessor) - in which various proposals were solicited for a symbol. As can be seen, the MAP gradient flag predecessor has a file date of 8 Jul, 2009, and had most probably been submitted through the website's forum (by who, might become clearer when we re-enable it). The concept laid dormant for many years, along with the rest of the Newgon website.

The origins of the 2018 flag (we will upload one as soon as possible) are a Tumblr user named comrade_lecter[22], who handed the graphic on to a user going under the name of Stenna, who published it in June of that year.[23] The graphic then went viral throughout social media, although after its removal by Tumblr, Stenna's tumblr was then squatted by a hostile actor.[24] Tumblr trolls have subsequently been suggested by various "fact checkers" as the true source of the flag, although this is likely to have resulted from the confusion surrounding Tumblr's censorship attempt.

Since it was published, the MAP Flag has become internet folklore, attracting many variations inspired by common alternative pride flags. These have been wrongly interpreted as entryist attempts.

Erroneous claims of novelty and trolling by "fact checkers"

Mainstream "Fact Checkers" at Snopes.com have erroneously claimed that the MAP Flag concept "originated with a troll experiment on Tumblr", although this information is now considered to be outdated - and is likely to be revised. AFP Fact Check repeated those claims.[25][26] The reason behind these fact checker's dismissive bias and hasty research is clearly the (again, erroneous) fear that MAPs are attempting to rejoin the LGBTQ+ community after years of ostracism. The fact checkers are trying to disprove this already ludicrous thesis, to protect the LGBTQ+ movement. It has also been claimed that Minor Attracted People didn't coin their own term of identification, which as this article demonstrates, is an ahistorical act of erasure which benefits the CSA insustry and medical lobby.

MAP Movement

While there exists no larger scale organized activism at present, MAPs have a long history of organizing, going back to former associations with the Gay Movement; debatably to its very founding. At the time, they described themselves as pederast or pedophile groups, and not MAPs. The LGBT alliances only broke down in the late 80s and 90s for political reasons (gay assimilationism). For the purpose of activism, those organizations still existing continue to operate as websites and close circles of long-term members only - NAMBLA being the most high-profile example. We describe individuals first known for their association with LGBT-aligned MAP organisations as first-wave MAP activists. A person who is known as an internet personality, or as part of any organization founded in the 21st Century, is a second-wave MAP activist.

Online

See also: Minor attracted community.

Online activism is known to take place on a variety of public facing fora. Those we are fairly sure about follow:

  • Fediverse (Mastodon and Pleroma in particular) - these decentralized platforms have been used by large numbers, but involve little public interface.
  • Twitter - has had a NOMAP contingent ever since said movement was founded. Various NOMAPS were banned, but overall MAP membership saw a boom in the time leading up to the MAP Flag publicity of 2018 and 19. Many were banned, and advocacy for pedophilia was defined as counter to the ToC, but small groups of determined sockpuppeteers persist.

Further, we have seen limited activity on:

  • Tumblr.
  • 4Chan.
  • Reddit.
  • Quora.
  • Discord.

Further, internal discussion, theorizing and organizing takes place on communities such as BoyChat, FreeSpeechTube and Virped.

Other sites have been suggested as present or future interfaces:

  • Twitch - the video streaming service, is a strategic frontier due to the left-wing "Breadtube" e-celebs who use it to bait the alternative right. MAPs may gain access to these leftist/SJW groups by impersonating the alternative-right and/or planting individuals within these communities. Twitch has had many controversies concerning high-profile streamers who have in some way been (usually spuriously or weakly) linked to "pedophilia". Since Breadtube Twitch streamers tend to debate on outlandish and provocative topics, Twitch has been repeatedly touted as a future breeding ground for awareness-raising.
  • YouTube - due to its size, there have been various controversies with users making statements seeming to condone adult-child sex, and these go back into the 00s (search "dendrophilian"). These provocative videos attract a diversity of comments. Depending on Google's take on the culture-war, YouTube will be an important battleground in the decades to come.
