Beert C. Verstraete

Beert C. Verstraete (b. 2 April 1944, Zwolle, The Netherlands) is a Dutch‑Canadian classicist who immigrated to Canada in 1958, earned his PhD in Classics at the University of Toronto in 1972, and spent his academic career at Acadia University (Wolfville, Nova Scotia) from 1978 until his retirement in 2011 (tenure 1983; full professor 1991; department chair 1990–2000 and 2006–2009). His research focuses on Roman literature, Erasmus/Renaissance Latin, and (especially) homosexuality and pederasty in Greco‑Roman antiquity. He co‑authored The Age of Marriage in Ancient Rome (2003), co‑edited Same‑Sex Desire and Love in Greco‑Roman Antiquity and in the Classical Tradition of the West (2005/2006), co‑edited (with Thomas K. Hubbard) Censoring Sex Research: The Debate over Male Intergenerational Relations (2013). He has been openly gay since the early 1970s and was active in gay and lesbian rights on campus.
