He was recognized for his advocacy of sex education, the scientific study of sexuality, and his efforts to preserve historical documents and research in the field.

In relation to MAPs

Haeberle founded and directed the Archive for Sexology, which houses a vast collection of materials, including lived sexual experience of MAPs (see about Sext Kopf and David Gwyn Jeffreys).

Haeberle was a critic of the paraphilias, dubbing them a "prescientific" concept (2010, below). He has also written on pedophilia and its sociological implications.

His analysis in Historical Roots of Sexual Oppression, is referenced in discussions about societal reactions to non-normative sexualities, and the historical roots of moral panic.

Alongside Dr. Fred Berlin and others, Haeberle provided a positive pre-publication endorsement for the book Censoring Sex Research: The Debate over Male Intergenerational Relations (2013).

Haeberle is mentioned by William Percy. During a visit to Berlin, Percy and Thomas Hubbard reportedly met with Haeberle.
